Norton Internet Security 2005 is a bundle of software by Symantec that contains several security related programs including Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall. As you might know, a firewall manages incoming and outgoing traffic to protect your computer.
If you are having problems signing in to Messenger it might not have the correct access rights in your firewall. If you still cannot sign in after verifying this and you suspect Norton Internet Security of being the cause you can try to temporarily disable or even uninstall it.

Almost every firewall has a list in what you can set Internet access rights for every program installed. If Messenger is not able to sign you in to the service, it is possible that it does not have the correct rights in the Norton Internet Security Firewall. To verify if this is the case and fix it if necesarry follow the steps below.
First open Norton Internet Security, right click the icon in your taskbar and select Open Norton Internet Security.
Once Norton Internet Security is started, select Personal Firewall and click the Configure button on the right.
First go to the Programs tab which can be found at the top. At the bottom of the Program Control screen you will find a list where you can set internet access for each program. Scroll down until you find Microsoft MSN Messenger. Now see if it if it is set to Permit All under Internet Access. If not, click it with your left mouse button and select Permit All.
If you changed anything, click OK to accept and go see if MSN Messenger works now.
To quickly find out if Norton Internet Security is the cause of Messenger not being able to sign-in you can temporarily disable it and see if your problem persists. To disable Norton Internet Security, right click the icon at the left side of your clock and select Disable Norton Internet Security. You will see a little cross appear in the icon telling you it is disabled.
Now try if you are able to sign in to MSN Messenger. If it works now, and you have made sure MSN Messenger has the correct access rights, reinstalling Norton Internet Security might fix your problem. When you are finished testing, right click the Norton Internet Security icon again and select Enable Norton Internet Security.
In some cases the firewall doesn't stop bothering you until you completely uninstall Norton Internet Security. To do this go to Start, then Control Panel, select add or remove software, look up Norton Internet Security in the list, and remove it. If Messenger works now we have found the cause. You can now choose to install Norton Internet Security again to see if the problem is solved after reinstalling it or choose a different firewall.
