If you use Messenger with a browser other then Internet Explorer set to the default (e.g. Opera or Firefox), Messenger will still happily open links and your hotmail inbox in Internet Explorer. If you want Messenger to use Opera or Firefox instead, follow the steps provided in this article.
If you found this article useful and want to share it with others you can use the following codes to link to it. The first box contains html code for websites, the second box contains bbcode for forums.
If you have not already, go to http://www.msgplus.net/ and download the latest version of Messenger Plus! While installing watch out that you do not accept the optional adware by accident. If you are unsure what this is about you are advised to decline it!
Download and install stuffplug (one of the most popular plugins for Messenger Plus!), you can get it here. While installing, it will ask you for a validation key, you can generate it at this page.
Finally we are going to enable the feature that allows all links to be opened in your default browser. Go to your MSN Messenger contact list and click 'Plus' on the top menu, now go to 'Preferences...' and then click 'Plugins'. You will now find a list with installed plugins where you have to select 'Stuffplug-NG' and click 'Configure'. In the Stuffplug options screen select 'Open all links in default browser' and after hitting 'OK' you are ready to go!
Now test if MSN Messenger will open links in your favorite browser.
If MSN Messenger still opens links in Internet Explorer this is most likely because it is still set as default browser. To make Firefox your default browser, start it and go to 'tools', 'options...' and click 'Check now' under 'Default browser'.
For Opera go to 'Tools', 'Preferences', 'Advanced' and click 'Programs' in the menu on the left side. Now select 'Check if Opera is default browser on startup' click 'OK', and restart Opera.
If you are using a different browser look for the default settings option at the browser options or use this program by ramesh to set the default browser.
