MSN / Windows Messenger error code 0x81000302

Problem description

When you start Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger you cannot sign in, and you get error code 0x81000302 along with the message:

Signing in to .NET Messenger Service failed because the service could not be found. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

This error is usually caused by disconnected network media. Check if any network cables are connected properly or if the adapter is properly connected.
