When you start Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger you cannot sign in, and you get error code 0x81000303 along with the message:
Sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect.
In addition, you may receive the following message after trying to sign in a few times:
Microsoft .NET Passport has made your account temporarily unavailable to help prevent other users from guessing or obtaining your password.
If you also got this message it may take a while before the solutions on this page allow you to access messenger again.

Your password may be incorrect, make sure you typed your username and password correctly. To check if it is a problem on your computer, try if you can login here (passport.net) with your msn username and password, click on the Sign in button then type your username and password. If this fails someone else may have guessed your password and changed it. The only solution then is probably getting a new account and give that a password that is not easy to guess and keep this password safe.
If you can login on the passport.net site, however there may be a problem with MSN Messenger. First try this: Click start, then run. Type: regsvr32 softpub.dll and press enter.
If MSN Messenger still does not work, try the following. In Internet Explorer go to the tools menu, click on internet options, then on the advanced tab. Go down to the security section, then make sure check for server certificate revocation is off. use SSL 2.0 and use SSL 3.0 should both be on. MSN Messenger requires SSL for the authentication process (validating your username / password).
If you still cannot sign in, you can try reinstalling MSN Messenger, or even Windows itself.
