MSN / Windows Messenger error code 0x8100031a

Problem description

When you start Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger you cannot sign in, and you get error code 0x8100031a along with the message:

There was a problem connecting you to MSN Messenger.

Possible solution / fix

First exit Messenger by right clicking the icon in your taskbar and then choose exit. Now go to start, then run and type regedit, after that hit ok. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft. Delete the MSNMessenger key and your problem should be fixed.
