Open Messenger and click on tools, then options, then connection tab. Untick the "I use a proxy server box". Try to sign in. If this didn't work tick it again.
Make sure if Internet Explorer supports 128 bits encryption. Open Internet Explorer and click Help, then About Internet Explorer. If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128 bits download and install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack. MSN Messenger needs encryption to authenticate (check your username / password)
In Internet Explorer: click Tools, then Internet Options, click Lan Settings in the connection Tab, click the "automatically detect settings" box and hit ok twice to confirm. This will let Internet Explorer find out the best way to connect to the Internet via the current network.
If you have a network: try to check if your proxy settings are the same as on a different pc on the network where messenger does work. You can find the settings on the connections tab in Internet Explorer (see previous item)
